What we mean by Gen 4
Gen 4 is market shorthand, not an official governing-body certification. In this guide, we use it for foam-first paddles that move beyond traditional polypropylene honeycomb cores: full foam, floating foam, dual foam, or foam-dominant constructions.
Tournament legality still depends on the exact model being approved by the relevant governing body. Do not assume a paddle is legal just because it is called Gen 4.
#1 Honolulu J2CR Crystal Blue
The J2CR Crystal Blue is the best Gen 4-style paddle in our current rankings because it does not feel like a science experiment. The Gen 4.5 multi-density EPP foam build gives it power and dwell, but the paddle still plays balanced: 9.5 overall, 9.5 forgiveness, strong spin, and quick enough hands for doubles.
The standard J2CR remains the safer pick if you need USAP approval, but the Crystal Blue version is the better all-around recommendation for players who want the newer surface.
Best attacking foam: Bread & Butter Loco
The Loco uses a dual-foam construction with an EPP center and EVA perimeter. It is not the softest foam paddle here; it is the one built to attack. The 9.4 power and 9.4 pop scores make it the best Gen 4-style pick for players who want to dictate points.
Best control foam: Honolulu J2NF
The J2NF is the control and forgiveness answer (Sword & Shield, not J2CR). It uses Gen 4.5 notched multi-density foam, carries a 7.0 twist weight, and plays calmer than the J2CR. If you want the foam-core upgrade but your game is built around resets and blocks, this is the safer premium pick.
Best budget Gen 4-style paddle
Enhance MPP Turbo is the best budget Gen 4-style paddle if you want pop and spin. Enhance EPP Turbo is the better budget choice if you want a denser, more controlled feel. Both are full floating foam paddles with EVA perimeter rings, and both drop to $99.99 with code PRH.
Other Gen 4 picks worth knowing
- Honolulu J3CR Crystal Blue: best forgiving square Crystal Blue option for doubles.
- Honolulu J6CR Crystal Blue: best elongated Crystal Blue option for reach and put-away power.
- RPM Q2 Widebody 16mm ($212.49 with PRH) and Friday Aura Pro Widebody ($159 with PRH): both 9.2, the best Gen 4 widebodies we have tested. Q2 vs Aura Pro.
- Volair CMD Hybrid 16mm ($161.99 with PRH): Gen 4 unibody foam with a HexGrit face and 9.45 spin. 11SIX24 Vapor Power 2 ($199.99 with PRH): MPP foam hybrid with quick hands.
- Enhance DUO: best innovation thanks to its DuoFoam Ridge Core and denser connected feel.
- Six Zero Coral Pro Hybrid: best fast hybrid — 111.7 swing weight with the highest spin score we have measured.
- Vatic V-SOL Pro Flash: best budget hybrid foam paddle for hand-speed players.
Bottom line
Gen 4 matters because foam-first construction can reduce harshness, improve consistency, and lower core-crush risk compared with older honeycomb power builds. But the label alone is not enough. Buy the paddle that fits your game: J2CR for most players, Loco for attackers, J2NF for control, and Enhance MPP Turbo for budget pop.
